Spigit Customer Summit in 76 Tweets   (12 / 13)
Tags: customer summit twitter tweets gary hamel jeffrey phillips ovo innovation spigit09

We were lucky to have Braden Kelley and Andrea Meyer in attendance at the August 13-14, 2009 Spigit Customer Summit in Carlsbad, CA. Both are deeply involved in the field of innovation, and both are well-followed via their blogs and Twitter. They brought their laptops, and tweeted the event using the hashtag #spigit09. I joined them on Day 2.

Twitter serves many purposes, and in this case, it's a great record of the event. So presented below are 76 tweets that describe the 2009 Spigit Customer Summit. They cover five sessions from the event:

Opening Remarks

braden kelleySean Toulon (TMAG) is speaking about the importance of having an innovation team and having connectors as part of that team #spigit09

andrea meyerCompanies' innovation teams may have only a handful of people, missing the ideas from the rest of the company - lost ideas #spigit09

Use Cases

AT&T panel member talking about how they merge normal idea mgmt usage with a Venture Capital approach w/ multiple funding rounds #spigit09

AT&T panel member talking about sometimes a bad idea is combined in the community with other ideas to morph into a great idea #spigit09

Communities refine ideas to make them better: part collaborative & part competitive #innovation #spigit09

Improving transparency of the idea evaluation process motivates employees to contribute #spigit09

Mitre panel member talking about their non-profit's part-collaborative, part-competitive approach to innovation in govt sector #spigit09

IBM's Smarter Cities initiative pulls together multiple stakeholders from public and private sectors to discuss & contribute ideas #spigit09

IBM's Smarter Cities initiative now looking to evolve series of ideas through a series of events, using prediction mkts inbetween #spigit09

Interesting that 2 of the 3 panel members main reward for ideas is actually funding for an idea, not some kind of cash reward #spigit09

Previous panel on use cases was moderated by @bhc3 #spigit09

Best Practices

up next: best practices for planning an #innovation community, launching it, engaging members, and which metrics to track #spigit09

Best Practices panel has now started - with MedPlus, Pfizer, and Wal-Mart panel members - moderated by Jeffrey Phillips #spigit09

Best practice: align #innovation to a corporate goal or strategy. But could the strategy itself be too limiting? #spigit09

It is interesting that a lot of the people working with idea mgmt for the various corporates are fairly young (not all of course) #spigit09

Getting and keeping idea management engagement is the next topic for the panel... #spigit09

Pfizer replaced their CEO employee suggestion e-mail very publicly with their idea mgmt system #spigit09

Launching the idea-management community: video clips w/ senior leaders, teaser trailers, seeding it with ideas #spigit09

Pfizer seeded their environment w/ the obvious ideas to redirect idea energy, and also w/ some ideas that were designed to provoke #spigit09

SaaS seems to be the preferred choice for companies starting out with idea mgmt - so companies can focus on adoption and not tech #spigit09

It is important to involve reps from HR and Internal Comms as members of volunteer innovation team - J Phillips (OVO Innovation) #spigit09

What's most rewarding when u submit an #innovation idea? seeing the company take action on it; that it didn't go into a black hole #spigit09

The role of social media in corporate-wide innovation: capturing "quiet contributions" from the fringes of the organization #spigit09

Medplus panelist made a great point about how we love "heroes" but often the idea advancement happens behind the scenes by others #spigit09

Pfizer panelist talking about how they have had great success with the tell-a-friend and watching features #spigit09

Pfizer panelist mentioned the point that the hyper-engaged people are generally the same across various social tools #spigit09

When you're organizing a volunteer innovation effort around idea mgmt, you may want to draft the hyper-engaged to volunteer #spigit09

Interesting question - What do you do about really great ideas that people seem to be not finding in your idea mgmt system? #spigit09

Spreading #innovation software enterprisewide: find a sponsor who's BOTH engaged& has a pressing need 2 solve; not just IT project #spigit09

Gary Hamel: Inventing Management 2.0

Gary Hamel about to start speaking on "Inventing Mgmt 2.0" - #innovation #garyhamel #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about the question of why some people think that certain people are creative and others aren't #spigit09

One of the most fundamental battles in corporations today is #innovation v. organization - innovation still happens DESPITE things #spigit09

Hamel says management is 1 of the most important inventions of last 150 yrs - figuring out how to get people 2 do things in scale #spigit09

Gary Hamel's heirarchy of innovation - management, industry architecture, business model, product/service, and operational #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about how it took American car companies a generation to understand what Toyota had done w/ regards to people #spigit09

"We are paying attention the different types of innovation in inverse proportion to their potential impact." - Gary Hamel #spigit09

Hamel: why has the evolution of management slowed? Most mgmt techniques were invented 1890-1915 & we're still using them #spigit09

Hamel: have we reached the end of management? No, we're just tied to old paradigm. We're efficient but squander imagination #spigit09

"We can create organizations that can manage incredible complexity, but with great inflexibility" - Gary Hamel - #innovation #spigit09

Gary Hamel - We have reached a point in history where change has gone hypercritical - things are changing at an exponential rate #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about how the time from leader to laggard in an industry is now sometimes measured in months #spigit09

Hamel on corporate change: usually crisis is needed: it took $14billion turn in earnings 2 change IBM from product co 2 service co #spigit09

Gary Hamel now talking about how organization change in crisis is similar to third world revolutions - decapitate the #leadership #spigit09

Hamel: Knowledge itself is becoming a commodity: knowledge-leveling. Outsourcing has pushed knowledge out #spigit09

Hamel: Organizations need to create more value per capita in their organization than competitors can. #innovation is a premium #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking abt how companies need to find ways to unlock initiative and creativity of their employees - rest is commodity #spigit09

Hamel: you can force obedience but not passion, creativity and initiative - and those are what companies need #spigit09

Gary Hamel: I think the future is often predictable, but uncomfortable: It's not unknowable but unpalatable #spigit09

Question to Gary Hamel - Your big 3 (creativity, initiative, passion) describe entrepreneurs. How do you keep them in big company? #spigit09

Gary Hamel: W.L. Gore is one of the world's most innovative companies. They have no titles, CEO was elected by the company #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about how commitment is voluntary and WL Gore policy of being able to say no to a request and elected leaders #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about how the more consolidated the control of change is, the less resilient an organization will be #spigit09

At HCL Technologies, employees can fill out a trouble ticket on their boss; It's visible & only initiator can close it. #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about how democracies are more resilient because change can come from the bottom #spigit09

Gary Hamel: how do you build a company that can thrive despite mediocre leadership? #spigit09

Gary Hamel: every Gore employee is evaluated by peers & only metric is the value you've added to the company #performanceReview #spigit09

Gary Hamel talking about how we need to get better at doing management experiments like we do in other sciences - #innovation #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: External Innovation Communities

Day 2 of Spigit Innovation Summit is kicking off - so lots of tweets from me are about to start coming across the wire #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips talking about the castles & ships metaphor & whether innovation is abt projecting innovation or keeping it inside #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: Great exercise is to purposely build 'failure projects'. Learn what can go wrong, pick up signals for innovation #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: Sometime "customer-led" innovation is really a form of strategic abdication #spigit09

Everyone in room wants to disrupt the market - interesting - Can everyone be disruptive? What is the impact of everyone doing it? #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: external community structures: (i) suggestive vs directed; (ii) open vs. invitation #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: Dell has 13k ideas in their open suggestion model #spigit09

1/10 of 1% of ideas submitted on IdeaStorm apparently are found to be useful (1 out of a 1000) - #innovation #spigit09

J. Phillips talking abt how suggestive innovation sites like IdeaStorm can have problem of vocal minority influencing majority #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: The directed, invitational external community model best for generating disruptive innovations #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: lurking is a form of community participation: curiosity #socialmedia #spigit09

Anywhere from 20-40% of employees may participate in your innovation community - Your rollout comms and culture have a huge impact #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips talking about Lotka's Law and communities and how w/ 100 people in community, 10 participate, 1 partic frequently #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: Can't be a "little bit pregnant" w/ external innovation communities. Need to establish a strong engagement model #spigit09

when u create external open #innovation community, u must follow up on ideas or you'll disappoint yr customers/prospects #smchat #spigit09

J Phillips talking about how you have to visualize your process for integrating the ideas that come out of an innovation community #spigit09

Jeffrey Phillips: staffing open #innovation community: 3-5 people to respond to the ideas, rank& assess them, follow up on them #spigit09

J Phillips - When building innovation community, you have to position it as a site where there is something in it for them #spigit09

J Phillips- To get participation in innovation community, members must trust that something will change as result of participation #spigit09

Thanks to Braden and Andrea for their great tweets during the event.
